Gramophone (phonograph)
When missionaries first came to Korea, their western materials aroused the curiosity of the Korean people. Among many, the phonograph, was both interesting and frightening at the same time. The human sound that came out of the box had people wondering if there was a human inside.
Choi Hong-jong, who was a known gangster in Gwangju, took the matter to his hand to check if there is a man inside the box. He visited the missionary’s home, accepted Jesus, and became the first pastor in Gwangju. The phonograph was a tool that was effective for early evangelism.
